So - You'd like to play guitar faster? It's easier to do than you think with just a few simple tips. Here's how...
Just realize that playing the guitar faster can often mean you're more inclined to allow for sloppy playing and less precision.
When you start you quest for getting your guitar licks down faster, make it a MUST to go for being clean at it. In the end, your playing skills will grow on all levels.
Now that we've covered that, let's get to it...
Here's a couple things you can do immediately to help improve your guitar speed very quickly.
More often than not, guitarists lack SPEED because they lack knowledge. In other words, they "stall" because they are lost on where to go next. I call this "not being liquid".
Ideally, you want to be able to travel all over the neck of a guitar without having to "fumble around" with where to go next. Miss this part and I don't care how quick your guitar speed is, you'll "stall", "stutter" and feel lost.
TRANSLATION: You won't play guitar fast!
So...
STEP #1) Know where to go on the neck of the guitar. That's easier to do than you think and that's another article within itself but I'll give you a simple reference.
There are only 12 notes on the neck of a guitar. Period! After that, everything just repeats itself and remains true on every string. Easy enough!
Now you may be saying DUH!!!
BUT......You'd be amazed at the number of players (old and new) that don't really understand what this means and HOW TO USE IT IN A VERY POWERFUL WAY!
One simple example is to refer to the top [E] string. No matter where you play it in the neck of the guitar, you can go up two frets from that position (towards your picking hand) and DOWN two strings (on the [D] string) and boom, you're sitting on the same note.
Remember that... Two frets up and two strings down!
I cover this in full detail in my complimentary "Bridge Course". You can jump there by using the BIO box in the author section on this page.
Onward...
This simple rule is also true on the [A] string and the [G] string.
Just sit your finger on any fret on the [A] string, go up two frets and down two strings to the [G] string and "PRESTO!"... You're playing the same note but with a different tone.
THIS CAN GIVE GREAT SOUND AND "FEEL" TO YOUR PLAYING! Just try landing on that secondary note instead of your normal note on the top and it will really make your playing more diversified.
KNOWING THIS SIMPLE STEP CAN HELP YOUR SPEED BIG TIME BECAUSE YOU'LL KNOW WHERE TO GO AND AVOID STALLING!
Step #2) Getting more coordinated.
Sounds easy enough right? Well.... No matter how good you are, you can always work on this.
One of my favorite things to do is the simple CHROMATIC scale.
Simple start on the top E string and put your index (#1) finger on the first fret and pick. Now your number two goes to the second fret, your third goes to the 3rd fret and the forth goes to the 4th fret!
I call them "1,2,3,4's".
Move to the next string and do the same thing. continue to the bottom string and then come back up to where you started working in reverse.
Do it clean with no stalls or foul ups!
After doing it clean, start the same process at the second fret and do the 1,2,3,4's.
Do this all the way up the neck --- CLEAN!
Once you've done it clean, start looking where you can incorporate STEP 1 in this 1234 drill.
These 2 simple ways to improve guitar speed work wonders. Just don't settle for letting yourself get bored and skip them.
Do them every day for one week and watch what happens! You'll be amazed!
Hope this helps! Take it easy.
