Passion in Pinstripes: the Synyster Gates Custom-S

/

guitarz.blogspot.com - Guest blog by Olivia Lennox:

Musician endorsed guitars go way back. Axe masters such as Steve Vai, Slash and Joe Perry have all put their name to Les Paul guitars, while Fender and Gibson also have a huge catalog of models endorsed and used by famous guitarists. Schecter have had some big name relationships over the years too, including Mark Knopfler and Pete Townshend, but it’s their long-term sponsorship with Avenged Sevenfold guitarist, Synyster Gates, that has resulted in this latest and rather special offering.

The Synyster Gates Custom-S features many of the specifications used by the Avenged Sevenfold guitarist on his signature model, including Sustainiac Stealth. This unique pickup system replaces the normal neck Humbucker and enables Gates to sustain feedback at all levels, a feature that makes Gate’s heavy attack style so distinctive.

Available from January 2012, the Synyster Gates Custom S is a startling-looking guitar. In black, three-piece mahogany and featuring silver pinstripes, the guitar is as distinctive in color as it is in design. With sleek Avenger body and clawed head, it provides a statement worthy of any hard rock or metal outfit. With left-handed models available, the price tag for the 24-fret, 25.5 inch neck guitar is $50 shy of the $1,700 mark, but it’s doubtful you’ll find a more distinctive Avenger axe for the money.

Sustainiac

Described by Gates as his “secret weapon,” the Sustainiac feature provides sustained and controlled feedback. In the position where the normal neck Humbucker pickup sits, the Sustainiac circuit processes the pickup signal and sends it to the Sustainiac driver, where the amplified note is turned into vibrational energy and fed back to the strings. The result is an ability to sustain feedback indefinitely, as if playing the guitar inches from a loud amp. Of course, the Sustainiac system can be turned off, allowing normal Humbucker tones.

Features

Gates’ signature pinstripe design is one of the most distinctive in the metal world. It works well with the Avenger shape, creating quite a unique-looking guitar that while clearly metal and rock in shape, also exudes a retro feel. Made in three-piece mahogany for extra stability, the Synyster Gates Custom-S is obviously built to last. With an ebony fingerboard that Schecter say produces a snappy and crisp attack with the density of Maple but with a stronger fundamental tone, the Synyster Gates Custom-S is equipped with a Floyd Rose 1000 Series bridge and a Floyd Rose 1000 locking tremolo system. The Synyster Gates Custom-S also has a Grover Rotomatics 18:1 gear ratio for finer tuning, Seymour Duncan Invader pickups that complement the Sustainiac system, 3-way volume toggle, on-off mini toggle, and 3-way normal-mix-harmonic mode mini toggle.

Schecter

When it comes to American guitar makers, Schecter are often overlooked with the likes of axe giants such as Fender and Gibson taking more than their fair share of the guitar world’s laurels. Yet, Schecter are a passionate guitar manufacturer and the Synyster Gates Custom-S is a good example of the dedication and fastidiousness they invest in their axes. The Custom-S had been on Schecter’s design drawing board for years, but the company always seemed reluctant to release the product to the market until they were wholly satisfied that it was not only the best guitar that they could produce, but also that it was as close to Gates’ original signature guitar.

For those not familiar with the company, Schecter was founded in 1976. Originally selling only replacement parts for Fenders and Gibsons, by 1979, founder David Schecter launched his own fully assembled electric guitars based on the Fender designs. An exclusive range, but very expensive, originally only 20 stores across America stocked Schecters. They owe much of their contemporary success to Pete Townshend of The Who, who fell in love with one of these early Schecter guitars and was the first high profile guitarist to use one on stage. Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits also used Schecter Stratocaster-style guitars to record "Making Movies", and has owned many Schecters over the years.

In 1987, Hisatake Shibuya, a Japanese entrepreneur and owner of the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, bought Schecter. Hisatake Shibuya devoted all his efforts to manufacturing high-end, expensive custom instruments. As a result, Schecter have been endorsed over the years by high profile guitarists, such as Stone Temple Pilots’ Robert DeLeo, and Jay Noel Yuenger and Sean Yseult of White Zombie. And Synyster Gates complements such esteemed company rather well.

Fender Telecaster Thinline JA-90 Jim Adkins signature guitar

/

Just a Fender Telecaster, not a vintage model but a particularly beautiful one, the thinline Jim Adkins signature model with Seymour Duncan P-90s, Adjusto-matic bridge and magnificent transparent black finish.

The way it combines the simplicity of the good old Tele with a jazz guitar sophistication, how can one not love this guitar?

Duff McKagan Fender P-bass / snowboard hybrid!

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

Here's an email from JPM:

Longtime Guitarz reader, it's an amazing blog.

Anyways, I don't know if you're aware of this or not but I just saw on YouTube a snowboard company that build a snowboard out of a Duff McKagan Fender P-bass that is both playable and rideable - its pretty crazy. They even have footage of it being ridden accompanied with a sound from the pickups that they hooked up to a wireless rig.

Check it out, I figured you'd appreciate something like this.
Hey, thanks for that JPM. We've seen a few guitars already made out of pieces of sporting equipment (cricket bat guitar, tennis racquet guitar, even a guitar made from a boat oar) so I guess it figured sooner or later we were going to get a guitar convered into a piece of sporting equipment instead!

Courtney Love's signature Squier Vista Venus

/

I'm happy to have found a decent picture of a Squier Venus, for I wanted to show one for a while now. Though it's not overwhelmingly creative or new, it's still one of the last few efforts of Fender to produce a new design (that's so rare that for example the new release of Fender recycles the 1960s Marauder prototype).

Well actually it's not exactly a Fender effort, since while searching information about the Venus, I uncovered a story of blatant plagiarism, that you can find extensively detailed here. To make it short, some guys created a guitar based on the idea of blending the cool design of a Rickenbacker with the playability of a Fender, and they came up with the Mercury, producing a few handmade models. They sold one to Courtney Love (though they were actually trying to present it to Kurt Cobain), and she enjoyed it so much that she ordered some more, but their small company collapsed and they quit he guitar business.

A few years later they figured out that Squier had released the Venus, allegedly co-designed by Love, but obviously a copy of the Mercury with a Fender-ish headstock (knowing that you cannot patent a guitar shape, but only the headstock, as Fender knows very well for having issued the most copied guitars ever). Tim George who designed the Mercury and tells this story says that he cannot blame Courtney Love as much as Fender. You just have to have a look at these pictures to judge if this story is convincing or not!

Mercury vs Squier Venus
I don't know or care about this copying issue, but I really like Courtney Love, she's much more than what tabloïds show, she's a powerful and struggling woman and an inspired artist who opened the way for many others. And I do love women playing guitars, there are never enough of them - I cannot understand how could anybody ever consider that electric guitar is a male domain!

Anyway let's go back to the Venus. It was short-lived - released in 1997 and terminated in 1998 - and existed in 6- and 12-string versions. It had a characteristic Tune-o-Matic-like bridge and string-through-body holes, and if the commercial versions had two pick-ups - bridge humbucker and neck single-coil - and three different finish, Courtney Love's stage custom models had various finishes and only one pickup, different ones in different positions as much as I could judge from the pictures I found...

Traveling Willburys collection for sale includes 5 guitars and a pot of jam

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

The Traveling Willburys were a supergroup of sorts comprising members Lucky (Bob Dylan), Otis (Jeff Lynne), Charlie T. Jr. (Tom Petty), Lefty (Roy Orbison) and Nelson (George Harrison).

The group spawned all sorts of memorabilia including these guitars which were marketed by Gretsch but actually built in Korea. They are loosely based on the classic singlecut Danelectro design. I hadn't previously realised that so many variations existed.

Here we have a whole Traveling Willburys collection for sale which includes five guitars, i.e. one TW500 (I think that's the twin pickup model), one TW300T (that'll be the one with the trem), two TW200s (the non-trem TWs with the humbucker pickup) and one TW100 (the single coil equipped guitar).

The collection also includes three Traveling Willburys guitar boxes, a framed Traveling Willburys poster, a Traveling Willburys canvas bag, and a pot of "Genuine Will-Berry Jam".

Currently listed on eBay with a starting price of £999.

Burny MG-145S HY looking suspiciously like a day-glo B.C. Rich Mockingbird

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

Indeed, you would be forgiven for thinking that this might be a somewhat colourful B.C. Rich Mockingbird - it even has the cloud-shaped fingerboard inlays. However, it is a Burny MG-145S HY, another signature guitar of the late X Japan guitarist hide.

The colourful design reflects hide's flamboyant dress sense;
X Japan were considered pioneers of the visual kei movement, although by the time hide joined the band the other members were beginning to drop visual kei aesthetics.

The Burny MG-145S HY is equipped with a Fernandes Sustainer (remember, Burny is a brandname of Fernandes, so this is essentially a Fernandes guitar), a feature that hide used on many of X Japan's songs.

This guitar is currently on sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $2,333 which, no doubt, some would think optimistic for a B.C. Rich "copy".

Burny HR-195 HIDE - signature guitar of HIDE from X Japan

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

It seems unusual to see the Burny name on an original design guitar such as this. It's a brandname commonly associated with high-end Gibson copies produced by Fernandes. It seems that this Burny HR-195 HIDE is a signature model of the late Hideto Matsumoto, better known as HIDE (or even hide for his solo projects), guitarist of Japanese heavy metal band X Japan.

Anyway, what we have here is a guitar with mahogany body and neck (glued in), ebony fretboard, chrome hardware, two Schaller machineheads and Cyber Future Sonic Scanner pickups with the Hide logo, and Schaller machineheads.

It's currently for sale on eBay UK with a Buy It Now price of £695. The seller has done his homework and this would seem to be the going rate for these guitars.

Washburn Ace Frehley AF-40V

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

There's no point in even attempting to judge a guitar like this, the Washburn Ace Frehley AF-40V. It's a guitar designed with a particular band's image uppermost in mind, and when you're talking about a band like Kiss then the guitar needs to conform perfectly to everything they stand for. But when you know the manufacturer is Washburn, you know that the quality of the instrument is going to be impeccable.

This particular example, signed by Ace Frehley and only ever used as a display item, is currently being sold on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $3,000.

Ibanez PGMFRM1 Paul Gilbert Fireman

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

Proving once again that Gibson aren't the only ones who can do reverse body designs, here we see an Ibanez PGMFRM1 Paul Gilbert Fireman, the signature guitar for the Mr Big guitarist. With a set neck, korina body and three DiMarzio Area '67 pickups, the body is based on a flipped around Iceman with a little tweaking to create a lower horn.
This post originates at http://guitarz.blogspot.com - beware of those damned scraper blogs!
This example, one of a very limited edition, is currently being offered for sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $6,999.99 - which, I'm afraid, puts it into the realm of the serious collectors only.

Ibanez JS Chromeboy Joe Satriani signature

You may like or not like Ibanez guitars and/or Joe Satriani's music, but you can't deny that an all-chrome finish looks really cool, whatever the guitar, can you?

Duesenberg Starplayer TV Ringo Sheena signature

You remember the ultra green turtle shell or the black alligator skin Duesenberg Starplayers TV?

Well, here is the black and gold leaf checkered one, a limited edition signature guitar for Japanese rockstar Ringo Sheena, same cooler than cool model with its art deco gear - whole in shining gold - with another outrageous finish...

Enjoy!

Fender Wayne Kramer Signature Stratocaster

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

Continuing our short series of blog posts about guitars emblazoned with National flags, of course we had to feature something with the Stars and Stripes. The Fender Wayne Kramer Signature Stratocaster has just recently been issued by Fender, and is a highly detailed replica of the Strat that Brother Wayne used to encourage us to Kick Out The Jams with the legendary MC5 back in the 1960s.

Kramer has always preferred hardtail Strats, and indeed that is the case here. Another feature that is unusual is that it has a Seymour Duncan '59 in the middle pickup position. How often do you see a humbucker in the middle position, flanked by two single coils? A friend of mine, years back, had a Strat set up like this and it sounded fantastic. I've often wondered why this set-up isn't more commonly seen.

And before anyone says it, yeah I realise it's not an accurate representation of the Stars and Stripes. It is very cool though. Even I covet this guitar. Part of me thinks I would have liked to have seen this finish without the relic effect being applied, although another part of me likes that too, it makes it look as if the guitar has survived 100s of MC5 gigs.

Prince original purple cloud guitar

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

In February this year here on Guitarz we looked at a guitar inspired by Prince's cloud guitar built by Ergo Instruments. In that instance it wasn't meant to be an exact replica, but was Ergo's own interpretation of the design.

But now currently on eBay we see a genuine cloud guitar as played by Prince (and pictured in his hands on the cover of the January 2000 issue of Guitar Player magazine) and - surprisingly - supposedly the only example ever to have been finished in purple. According to the eBay listing:
It is one of the first three of 27 hand-built examples luthier Andy Beech made for Paisley Park Studios after Prince and David Rusan (who built the first four clouds) parted ways. This is not a Schecter or ESP. The guitar comes with the original letter of origination with serial number from Paisley Park and an original letter of authenticity from Andy Beech...
This is a fantastic guitar, but you'd need to be a pretty dedicated Prince fan to consider bidding with a starting price of $9,999 or Buying It Now for $17,499.

1979 Ibanez Marcel Dadi signature limited edition

/

This Ibanez Marcel Dadi is not a guitar you will not see everyday - not only because its design makes it special with its strangely angular cutaways, its wide neck adapted to picking and its classical guitar headstock, or of its quite unique electronics with a mini-humbucker in neck and an humbucker in bridge, plus the rotary switch, but mostly because only 24 were ever released in 1979 (plus 2 prototypes), and if I see the way this one is put on sale on eBay, the people who bought them then have now no idea of what they have!

This guitar could be the ultimate collector, isn't it?

Gretsch G5810 Bo Diddley

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

Here a guitar that should be instantly recognizable, namely the Gretsch G5810 Bo Diddley. The mystery is, how can such a very basic shape be so very cool?

The design of Bo Diddley's original rectangular guitar (a.k.a. The Twang Machine) is said to be the result of him wanting a smaller more convenient body shape to allow him to jump around on stage following an incident when he been leaping around with a Gibson L5 and ended up hurting his groin.

Giannini Craviola thinline 'Roberto Frejat'

/

A following to the previous Giannini Craviola post, thanks to Henrique's comment pointing this superb thinline version - the Roberto Frejat signature - I love this one even better!

Also we know now that these guitars are 2000s reissues - so they exist, they are not extraordinarily rare so there's hope to get some one day - but they still have to come from Brazil!

Gibson Trini Lopez

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

I remember seeing Trini Lopez on TV when I was a kid but never really got the music as this "Latin stuff" was definitely for the mums so this post is by way of making up a little for my youthful callowness. A beautiful 1967 Gibson Trini Lopez on eBay. I thought the headstock was reminiscent of a Firebird and a little Googling brought up this image of a Trini Lopez deluxe with reversed neck courtesy www.vintageguitars.org.uk

At the risk of sounding cynical (Moi?), this was a period when guitar manufacturer's marketing departments were working overtime to get us buying their products. It's hard to believe now but the guitar market was in decline at the end of the sixties and there were a lot of businesses trying to get a share of the pie. So, we have a Gibson 335 with diamond sound holes and a Firebird neck being promoted by a big star. It's notable that the Deluxe has florentine cutaways as opposed to the roundy ones. It's great that even something as cold as hard commerce can come up with something as beautiful as this.

Fernandes GM-85 MS Pearl Yellow Kenichi Ito

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

ESP are usually the manufacturer we immediately associate with weird and wonderful signature guitars designed for a whole host of Japanese guitarists and bassists, names that we in the West are not familiar with. However, Fernandes have also got in on this act (indeed we have looked at some of these previously), and this particular yellow guitar, the Fernandes GM-85 MS is the signature guitar of Kenichi Ito formerly of the band Iceman.

If it looks familiar to some of our regular readers, that may be because we previously featured a diminutive version of this guitar with built-in amp.

Warren Ellis Signature Tenor from Eastwood Guitars

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:

I was watching Later with Jools Holland the other night, and was intrigued by the session from Grinderman whose Warren Ellis was making an incredible sound with what appeared to be Fender Musicmaster or Mustang but with just four strings (see YouTube clip below - OK, so he's obviously using a lot of loops there too).

So, a quick search shows that it's actually the new Warren Ellis signature model tenor guitar from Eastwood Guitars. The alder body is offset like a Mustang rather than an even-waisted Musicmaster, although like the latter it has just a single pickup in the neck position, in this instance it's a blade style pickup. As is common with tenor guitars it has a shorter than usual scale-length of 23", for which the Fender student-model stylings seem all too appropriate.

Gretsch G6129-BZT Billy Zoom Tribute Silver Jet

/

guitarz.blogspot.com:
Here is a limited issue Billy Zoom tribute edition of the classic Gretsch Silver Jet. Zoom was guitarist and co-founder of Los Angeles band X. Zoom's own original guitar was put through a medical CAT scan by Gretsch and analysed so that this Tribute edition could be built in Gretsch's USA custom shop as closely as possible to the original. The G6129-BZT features a chambered body, pearloid banjo buttons on the Grover tuners, Bigsby B12 tailpiece, Seymour Duncan DynaSonic pickups, Synchro-Sonic bridge, and distressed finish and hardware.

This post is for Allison... Happy Birthday!
